How BGE is unnecessarily driving up your gas bill

When you open your January bill from Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), it may be your highest gas bill ever. BGE delivery rates are increasing again this January, a third annual increase as part of its $400 million overall gas and electric multi-year rate hike approved in 2023. BGE customers are now paying more than two dollars in delivery charges for every dollar they spend on gas to heat their homes.
The main reason why gas bills are going up is the gas pipeline replacement work that BGE calls “Operation Pipeline.” You may have already seen the company tearing up streets, sidewalks and yards in your neighborhood to replace gas mains, service lines and regulators. BGE argues that this work is necessary for safety, but a recent Maryland PIRG Foundation analysis suggests that Operation Pipeline prioritizes gas infrastructure expansion over risk reduction.
